The Q30 T8 Dimmable Daylight LED Tube Light from Quasar Science is a 4 long, 30W linear LED tube with a standard T8 bulb configuration. They fit easily into either a grip head, or a C stand with an arm thanks to the 5/8″ pin. These mounts are lightweight and sturdy so I can mount any type of tube light. These clips are made to fit larger T12 tube lights such as the Quasar Science Xcross-fades. I use them not only as background lighting, but also for product photography and lighting talent. Tube lighting has been a constant part of my experimentation since this shoot. This is what I Learned about Tube Lighting from my Productions Quasar Science Qu-LED Dimmable 5600K X8 Photometric Results I set them to the lowest setting I could before they turned off in the background scene. It is important to note that they can be dimmed. It produces a decent amount of light for such a small tube. Although it is a bit more expensive than the other models, I believe it is worth the value and versatility. For the 4′, the dimmable model costs $75. Quasar Science sold me four 4′ QLED T8’s for $300. These tubes can be a little tricky to mount if you don’t know how to use them, but that’s what makes it fun entry level computer science jobs. They worked great to break up the background pattern. IKEA also had a few tungsten LED bulbs that I wanted to test. They are very affordable at $75 each so I bought four 4′ daylight T8s. This was something I thought might be a great way to add a unique lighting element to the background. I have seen many music videos recently that used Quasar Science X Cross-fades and T8’s in different lengths. The look the producers were looking for wasn’t feasible in our space, so I came up with something else. You can read my review hereĪ promo shoot was required for our investigative unit. These suckers are bright, bi-colour and very bright. ![]() They were first introduced to me by the Q-LED tube lights powered by batteries from Quasar Science. I didn’t think I would use them as often as I do. Quasar Science tube lights have been my favorite lately. You can use white if you want a little extra output, or black if you really want to cut back on the spill. To begin, get a piece of foam core the length of your light. In this sense, it’s more like a strip of diffusion or gel than a piece of grip equipment. This isn’t as reusable as the pro version, but it’s much cheaper, and you can build and customize them to the light rig you’re working with. One method I’ve found incredibly helpful is making your own light control with foam core. It does a good job controlling spill, letting you get the light where you want it, but spending more than the light on a controlled system is not always possible, especially if you have multiple lights or banks of tubes to control. The industry-standard DOP choice unit for a four-inch tube light is over $200. Light control cases - known as egg crates or grids - are available, but they can be expensive. One downside of this design is that it makes the lights hard to control, illuminating your subject and whatever else is in the general direction. Without this, the individual LEDs would be too harsh and specular. One thing that most tube-style lights share is built-in diffusion, which scatters the light from the line of LEDs over a wide area. They come in slim, no-nonsense versions like the $75 Quasar Daylight T8s, all the way up to the app-controlled RGB Digital Sputnik Voyagers. They’re cheap, versatile, and you can rig them almost anywhere. Tube lights are probably the fastest growing type of fixture on film sets, both big and small. In this tutorial, we’ll go over how to build an inexpensive - and relatively simple - quasar-style light control using foam core.
